The cylinder-operated VZ23 produced from Nov 1941 to Oct 1942 only had a serial number on the cylinder body. The VZ23A produced from Oct 1942 to Mar 1943 had a serial number on the upper receiver. From Mar 1943 to Jun 1943 the VZ23A had a cylinder serial number on the cylinder body and the upper receiver had a "finished" serial number. From Jul 1943 to May 1944 they all had a serial number on the upper receiver. The VZ23B had a serial number on the left side of the receiver.
